Global Health Brigades (GHB)

Description:
The mission of our club, Global Health Brigades (GHB) is two-fold. One goal is to engage Jefferson students throughout the academic year by hosting educational events, including lectures by guest speakers in order to increase exposure to global healthcare and to develop cross-cultural competency. Another goal is to give students the opportunity to work with peers from multiple health programs through fundraising, event and trip planning, and an interdisciplinary global health experience through abroad one to two times per year. Global Health Brigades will add to the growing number of global health efforts at Jefferson by providing another avenue for students to participate in a meaningful service opportunity. The national Global Brigades organization currently sends medical, public health and other brigades to Honduras, Panama, Nicaragua and Ghana, but they have the potential to expand to other countries. The average trip is one week long, which allows students to fit this global health experience into their winter break and/or their summer. A week-long trip abroad also allows students to participate in paid and unpaid summer internships and to explore other interests. The mission of Global Brigades is to drive social change in the communities served in order to improve the quality of healthcare and overall health, particularly through health education. Our GHB club at Jefferson aims to contribute to the GB organization by sending students to these areas to provide acute clinical care as well as assist in developing infrastructure and tackling local health issues in order to have a positive, sustainable impact. After participating in a brigade, we hope that Jefferson students gain a broader understanding of cultural, economical, and social determinants of health. While planning for the brigade will be a large component of our club, our primary goal is to establish an active student organization that offers opportunities for students to learn more about global health through a lecture series and cultural events hosted throughout the year. Our aim is to provide students with additional opportunities to combine the study of healthcare abroad while contributing to a sustainable effort to help an underserved population. We hope to bring a greater awareness to the entire Jefferson community regarding the challenges other nations face in the delivery of quality healthcare.
