Stay fit, help the environment and enjoy convenient bike transportation throughout the city. The new rental service from Indego will start this afternoon and two locations are right on the Jefferson campus.

Now our staff and students have another way to enhance wellness, get around the city conveniently, and help the environment at the same time. Indego, Philadelphia’s first bike-share program, which is scheduled to launch today, features hundreds of bikes for rent and 70 locations throughout the city -- two of which are right on the Jefferson campus.

The Indego station at 925 Chestnut Street was installed on April 8, and another station at 923 Locust Street, near Jefferson Alumni Hall, was installed last week. Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter will appear at the Indego opening ceremony scheduled for today at Eakins Oval, located at 2451 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, when all locations will formally open.

How the Indego Bike Share Works
You can check out a bike at any Indego station with a credit card for a flat-fee of $4 per half hour, no membership required. Two membership options are available for those who plan on riding more often: Indego30 is $15 per month with the first hour of each trip free ($4 an hour for trips lasting longer than an hour); IndegoFlex is $10 per year with a flat-fee of $4 per hour.

Each station will include an electronic map of the surrounding area so that you can plan your trip, and a secure docking system where you can retrieve and return your rental. Once your trip is complete, drop the bike off at any Indego station in the city. Stations will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, providing a convenient way to travel at any time, every day of the year.

“I believe our students and staff will truly enjoy the chance to engage in Indego’s new bike-share system,” said Richard Webster, RN, MSN, Chief Operating Officer, Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals. “As an active and eco-friendly organization, we’ve been exploring the idea of implementing more bike-friendly options here at Jefferson, so I’m eager to see our institution take part in this new initiative.”

Ride Your Own Bike to Jefferson and Get VIP Parking
Jefferson has been supporting bike travel for some time, with bike racks at various locations on campus and space for more than 20 bikes available in the Hamilton Garage, located on the corner of 11th and Locust Street. The weather-protected racks in the P1 section of the Hamilton Garage are offered free of charge.

In continuing support of wellness and healthy lifestyles for our staff and students, Jefferson has committed significant storage space on campus for bicycles. In addition to other locations on campus, the Hamilton Garage on 11th Street, between Walnut and Locust, now includes dedicated space and bike racks that will accommodate more than 100 bikes.

How to Locate the Hamilton Bike Racks
The racks are on level P1, the first level as you enter the garage, on the far right side -- past the Garage cashier office.  When you pass the office, turn to the right. In that vicinity, along the perimeter wall, racks for motorcycle parking are also available.
