Biography

Dr. Christopher Hughes has nearly 30 years of clinical and leadership experience in hospital medicine, critical care medicine and hospice and palliative medicine, as well as a wealth of experience as a physician leader and educator.

Dr. Hughes completed a Graduate Certificate in Health Policy at Thomas Jefferson University School of Population Health (now Jefferson College of Population Health) and was quickly invited to begin teaching.

Dr. Hughes began practicing hospice and palliative medicine with the University of Pittsburgh's Palliative and Supportive Institute and Family Hospice and Palliative Medicine of Pittsburgh in 2012. He certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine (HPM) through the American Board of Internal Medicine. From 2013 to 2015 he was Co-Chief Medical Officer for Family Hospice and Palliative Medicine of Pittsburgh where he

  • Reduced per patient per day drug costs by 20%;
  • Introduced Toyota/LEAN quality improvement training to the organization;
  • Directed patient/family grievance mediation;
  • Successfully remediated Joint Commission and State Department of Health negative survey results;
  • Developed curriculum for Hospice Administrative Rotations for HPM Fellows;
  • Developed a physician staffing formula for hospice;
  • Surveyed large non-profit hospices on physician, advanced practice nurse and inpatient staffing;
  • Developed preparedness for Part D hospice implementation; and
  • Delivered regional education for physicians, nurses and other staff of hospitals and long-term care facilities.

Dr. Hughes is now a primary physician for an inpatient hospice unit.

Dr. Hughes has been active in organized medicine through the Pennsylvania Medical Society, American Medical Association, Society of Critical Care Medicine's local Chapter and others. He has led initiatives in patient safety, end-of-life care and health reform. He has also worked actively with the Pittsburgh Regional Health Initiative and other organizations advancing patient safety and end-of-life care.
