Jefferson Appoints Sandra Dayaratna, M.D., as Division Director of the Generalist Division of the Obstetrics & Gynecology Department


(PHILADELPHIA) – The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University announced the appointment of Sandra Dayaratna, MD, as Clinical Associate Professor and Director of the Division of General Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Dayaratna previously held faculty positions at Harvard and Case Western Medical Schools, and joins Jefferson most recently from West Virginia University where she served as Assistant Professor and Clerkship Director in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has been board certified as an OB/GYN specialist since 2002, and has served as an examiner for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology since 2011

Dr. Dayaratna is a graduate of Yale University and received her medical degree from Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, New Brunswick, NJ. She completed an internship and residency at the University of Rochester School of Medicine, Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Dr. Dayaratna is the recipient of multiple awards and accolades. In 2013, she was inducted into the Academy of Excellence in Teaching & Learning at West Virginia University. In 2011 she won the Amos Wainer Award from Jefferson Medical College for her leadership and dedication to the department. Dr. Dayaratna was previously named as one of Boston Magazine’s best OBGYN doctors and received a Bristol Meyers-Squibb health policy fellowship to study violence and health care costs. This year she was named a Surgical Scholar by the Association of Professors in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APGO).  She is a frequently requested speaker at the national professional society for educators in obstetrics and gynecology, APGO, and other venues.
