Research & Clinical Interests

I am a Professor in the Department of Radiation Oncology, specializing in thoracic and central nervous system tumors. I joined the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG) Lung Cancer Steering Committee in 1998 and has served as Chair or Co-Chair of several RTOG trials (9417; 9801; 0241; 0412), helping define standard of care for lung cancer and brain tumors. At TJUH, Iam the Principal Investigator of two IITs of hypofractionated thoracic RT and biologic agents (gefitinib, erlotinib), was appointed the RTOG Institutional Principal Investigator for the TJUH in 2009, and in 2011 was selected RTOG Vice-Chair for Publications and the Chair of the Publications Committee, successfully implemented a new policy for accrual co-authorship in publications, and implemented new RTOG Publications Guidelines. I am a member of the RTOG’s Steering, Executive and Full Member Committees, as well as RTOG Auditor and a senior author of the “Methodology of Clinical Trials” chapter in the lead radiation oncology textbook (Perez and Brady).  At TJUH, I am the Director of Clinical Research in the Department of Radiation Oncology, providing oversight of the Radiation Oncology Protocol Group (ROPG) and organizing operational activities of all radiation-related clinical trials.

With the transition to NRG Oncology, I became one of the three Co-Chairs of the NRG Oncology Publications Committee, as well as a member of the RTOG Foundation Board and the Publications Liaison to the NRG Ancillary Analyses Committee.  I serve as the TJUH Contact Principal Investigator for NRG Oncology, overseeing patient accrual at Jefferson and approximately 30 national and international affiliate institutions.

I frequently lecture on lung cancer or brain tumors at the national and international conferences such as the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology (ASTRO), the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO), and the International Association for the Study of Lung Cancer (IASLC) World Conference.

I lead the program of Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) for early stage lung cancer and lung metastases and co-direct the busiest brain/spine stereotactic radiosurgery and radiotherapy program in the tri-state region.  I am the senior radiation oncologist in the weekly Multidisciplinary Thoracic Clinic and Brain Clinic and am therefore well positioned to screen most patients with lung cancer and brain tumors for clinical trials.

I serve as a core group Oral Examiner during the Radiation Oncology Specialty Board annual examination in Louisville, KY, and was awarded several "Best Doctor" titles (Philadelphia Top Doctor; America's Top Doctor for Cancer; America's Top Doctor, America’s Top Oncologist).
