Dr. Pascal Jabbour Honored at Annual Wills Eye Ball

Pascal Jabbour, MD, Associate Professor of Neurological Surgery and the Chief of Neurovascular Surgery and Endovascular Surgery, was named an honoree at the annual Wills Eye Ball held on October 17, 2015 for his leadership in the treatment of retinoblastoma.

Retinoblastoma is an ocular cancer that affects roughly one in every 15,000 infants.  The median age at diagnosis is just 18 months.  Until recently, these young patients had to suffer from the harsh side effects of conventional chemotherapy and, in many cases, surgical removal of the affected eye.  Innovations at Jefferson now allow for small doses of chemotherapy to be targeted directly to the eye.

The award was presented by Dr. Robert Rosenwasser, MD, the Jewell L. Osterholm Professor and Chair of Neurological Surgery.  After reminding the audience that the two met when Jabbour was a junior neurosurgery resident, he said, “I cannot tell you how proud I am of Pascal.”

During his acceptance speech, Jabbour drew allusions to one of his favorite childhood pastimes. He asked the crowd to imagine a soccer player scoring a game-winning goal because a teammate skillfully passed the ball.  “This player gets all of the glory,” Jabbour said, “but he shouldn’t get all of the credit.”

He then went on to dedicate the award to his teammates: Dr. Rosenwasser, the staff members of Jefferson Hospital for Neurosciences’ interventional neuroradiology suite and, finally, “to the babies and families, whose courage inspires me every single day.”

Later in the evening, his colleague in retinoblastoma treatment was also honored.  Carol Shields, MD, Professor of Ophthalmology at Sidney Kimmel Medical College, co-manages all of Dr. Jabbour’s retinoblastoma patients.  She leads the Wills Eye Ocular Oncology service with her husband, Jerry Shields, MD.
