Philadelphia University + Thomas Jefferson University

Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee

The mission of the Institutional Animal Care & Use Committee (IACUC) is to assist investigators and staff of the University, helping them to plan and conduct research that uses animals in accordance with the highest ethical, humane, and scientific principles, and in compliance with federal laws and regulations.

The primary function of the IACUC is to ensure the humane and sensitive care and use of animals that are the subjects of the University's research programs. By law, this is accomplished by reviewing and inspecting all aspects of the University's animal care and use program, including all animal facilities and animal care records, animal use protocols, reviewing and investigating complaints about improper animal use, and making recommendations to the Institutional Official (IO).

This mandated review function, however, does not need to be an adversarial process; in fact, the philosophy of the Jefferson IACUC is that it also serves to assist investigators and staff at the University to fulfill their obligations under federal law, helping them to plan and conduct animal experiments in accordance with the highest scientific, humane, and ethical principles.

Within this site is the information that should assist you in performing your animal research at Thomas Jefferson University.
