JCHP Expands International Exchange in Japan
Two JCHP students, Araceli Beltran, Department of Physical Therapy and Gabrielle White, Department of Occupational Therapy have been selected to participate in a unique international exchange that brings together health professions students from Japan, Austria, the Czech Republic, and the United States. The exchange is funded through a grant from Kitasato University in Sagamihara, Japan, a long-time partner of the Jefferson College of Health Professions.
The exchange will take place at Kitasato University from February 27, 2017-March 3, 2017 and will engage students in discussions of international health care systems and provide the opportunity for students to collaborate in six interprofessional, international teams on specific patient case studies. At the conclusion of the week, the student teams will present their case study findings, which would include recommendations for possible medical care, the role of each practitioner specific to the case, and the health insurance system and cultural differences of each country that could potentially affect the care plan.
The original exchange between Thomas Jefferson University and Kitasato University began in 1992 and has expanded through the years, with over 100 students and 25 faculty participating. This most recent endeavor is a result of continued expansion and revision of the ongoing TJU-Kitasato University exchange. A new format for the exchange was piloted in March, 2015 with continued planning across the Universities throughout the Fall of 2015.
