My research focuses on the type 1 insulin-like growth factor receptor (IGF-IR), a receptor that plays important roles in the growth, differentiation and malignant transformation of cells. Like all growth
factor receptors, it is activated by ligands, in this case, three ligands, IGF-I, IGF-II and insulin. When activated, the IGF-IR also sends a strong anti-apoptotic signal. As a corollary, down-regulation of the IGF-IR leads to massive apoptosis, especially of tumor cells. Several patents on targeting of the IGF-IR have been filed by Thomas Jefferson University and my group, and two of these patents are developed by biotech and pharmaceutical companies.

In the laboratory, the present interests deal with signal transduction from the IGF-IR and the mechanism by which it activates arious genetic programs in the cell.
