The Jefferson Prostate Diagnostic Center is a collaborative effort of the departments of urology, radiology, and pathology at Thomas Jefferson University to provide state-of-the-art prostate imaging and biopsy services, a team approach utilizing urologists, radiologists, and pathologists, and new technologies that improve diagnostic accuracy and add prognostic information for prostate cancer patients. The Kimmel Cancer Center has been a leader in minimally invasive urologic oncology and has been performing urologic (minimally invasive) laparoscopy for urologic malignancies since 1991. The Center was the first in the area to perform laparoscopic radical prostatectomy and our surgeons have been performing the procedure since March of 2000. If you would like to learn more about some of the technical aspects of urologic laparoscopy, and see a replay of a live webcast of a laparoscopic kidney removal for kidney cancer, click here. Also, if surgery is recommended surgery to treat your prostate cancer, you may be a candidate for a new advance in the laparoscopic technique called the da Vinci® Prostatectomy. This new approach to laparoscopic prostatectomy provides access to the internal anatomy through five small incisions and the surgeon uses a robot system to complete the procedure. The da Vinci® surgical robot system empowers the surgeon to perform a very precise, nerve-sparing operation. Our Buddy Program provides trained volunteers who have been through cancer treatment themselves and now provide short-term, one-on-one support and information over the telephone to others facing cancer. (Information is available on other KCC Support& Education programs as well.) Jefferson’s Center for Integrative Medicine is dedicated to integrating the best of medical science with promising alternative and complementary therapies in order to support the health and wellness of the community.
