Metastatic Uveal Melanoma Program
Eligibility for the embolization treatment
The following general criteria will be applied to patients who have liver metastases and who are interested in receiving emboliztion treatment at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital. If patients are interested in the clinical trials at Thomas Jefferson University, a research nurse will contact them to further obtain information regarding their eligibility for the individual study. In that case, additional tests would be ordered to confirm your eligibility.
General Inclusion criteria for embolization treatment
• Biopsy-proven metastatic uveal melanoma in the liver. The total volume of the tumors must be less than 50% of the liver volume
• Good performance status (out of bed during daytime, able to perform daily activity without any assistance)
• Adequate renal and bone marrow functions:serum creatinine ≤ 2.0 mg/dl, granulocyte count ≥ 1000/mm3, and platelet count ≥ 100,000/mm3.
• Adequate liver function: bilirubin ≤ 2.0 mg/ml, albumin ≥ 3.0 g/dl, PT/PTT less than 1.5 times normal, and SGOT, SGPT and alkaline phosphatase less than 5 times normal
Exclusion criteria
• Presence of symptomatic liver failure including ascites and hepatic encephalopathy
• Presence of extensive extra-hepatic metastases
• Presence of untreated brain metastases. If patients have had previous treatment for the brain metastasis. MRI or CT scan of the brain must confirm the stabilization of the brain metastasis for more than 2 months.
• Occlusion of the main portal vein
• Presence of uncontrolled hypertension or congestive heart failure, or acute myocardial infarction within 6 months of entry
• Uncontrolled severe bleeding tendency or active gastro-intestinal bleeding
• Significant allergic reaction to contrast dye
• Immunosuppressive treatments such as systemic steroids, radiation treatment to the pelvis, or systemic chemotherapy within 4 weeks prior to the embolization
• Pregnancy
• Biliary obstruction, biliary stent or prior biliary surgery except cholecystectomy
