Developments in the field of genetics have brought society’s attention to the plethora of ways that biological research impacts on our lives. With the growing public awareness of biological research initiatives, such as the Human Genome Project, students are increasingly faced with the social implications of these developments. Simply exposing high school students to an introductory biology course is clearly not a sufficient academic effort to prepare students for a world where discoveries in the life sciences have profound implications. The basic principles of the life sciences need to be integrated early in the K-12 curriculum1. Through the Zebrafish Facility Tours and In-Class Zebrafish Unit, students will gain this fundamental knowledge of genetics at an early age.

Mission
Using Thomas Jefferson University’s Zebrafish Facility, the program can take life science and integrate it with the education of precollege students.
The mission of the Science Outreach Program is to foster an enthusiasm for science education, promote interest for future participation in a biology-related field, and allow all students the opportunity to learn life science through a hands-on, student-centered approach to instruction.
Goals
The goals of the program encompass educating the community about life science and incorporating live research as the primary teaching tool. The goals of the Science Outreach Program are to:
-
Instill in children a love for science, which may lead to productive careers in science for some of the children.
-
Improve the quality of science education within the classroom and at Thomas Jefferson University’s Zebrafish Facility.
-
Touring and teaching, using the Zebrafish unit, within schools located in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
-
Promote innovative instructional strategies using live laboratory demonstrations.
-
Foster knowledge and experience of science education to all students and teachers regardless of community, poverty or race.
