Thomas Jefferson University Hospital and Lower Bucks Hospital became partners against cancer in 1996 with the creation of the Jefferson-Lower Bucks Radiation Oncology Center. This center brings the top cancer specialists and the latest in oncologic treatments and equipment from Jefferson’s Kimmel Cancer Center to patients who live in Bucks County, western Burlington County and nearby Northeast Philadelphia. It remains the only radiation oncology facility in Bucks County fully integrated with an academic medical center.
The Jefferson-Lower Bucks Radiation Oncology Center is staffed by the experienced team of physicians from Jefferson’s Department of Radiation Oncology, along with physicists, technologists and nurses trained at Jefferson. In 1998, Dr. Arthur Harvey assumed the position as medical director of the Center and is joined on the medical staff here by Dr. Adam Dicker. The Center houses a dual energy linear accelerator with electron beam capability and a treatment planning machine called a simulator.
Three-dimensional treatment planning and delivery is available through integration with both Jefferson and the Department of Radiology at Lower Bucks Hospital. Our Center is the only department that offers true three-dimensional conformal radiation treatment planning and delivery in the region. Conformal therapy allows more focused treatment to the target area, while sparing surrounding normal organs. Therefore, patients can achieve the same cure rates as with standard therapy, but with significantly fewer side effects.
Jefferson-Lower Bucks Radiation Oncology Center allows for state-of-the-art treatment of patients with a variety of cancers, including those of the head and neck, breast, lung, prostate, brain, and rectum Patients receiving treatment at the facility have access to many clinical research trials available through both Lower Bucks Hospital and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Drs. Rudoler and Dicker work closely with their patients’ other physicians and caregivers to provide the best possible treatment in a modern and supportive environment. Patients have the resources of Lower Bucks Hospital as well as Jefferson available to them during and following their treatment. Having treatment at the Jefferson-Lower Bucks Radiation Oncology Center offers patients the advantage of being treated at a Jefferson facility without having to travel to the city.
