Perioperative

Peri-operative nurses are an integral part of Jefferson’s general and specialized surgical teams. They work side-by-side with renowned surgeons utilizing innovative technology from minimally invasive procedures to complex robotic surgery and transplants.  New OR nurses benefit from a comprehensive orientation and six months rotation in all specialties in both scrub and circulating roles.

Jefferson Surgical Center (JSC)

JSC is a hospital-based outpatient surgical center offering services including gynecological and breast procedures, orthopedic foot and ankle surgeries, general surgery and laparoscopic cases, as well as ENT and endoscopies.  The facility is comprised of a pre-operative holding/admission area, 4 fully functioning operating rooms and a 2 phase recovery room/discharge lounge. The surgical center provides services to more than 4,000 patients each year.  Nurses at JSC participate in shared governance and execute many daily decisions which impact patient flow and the delivery of high quality care.

Operating Room – TJUH / Methodist Hospital / JHN

There are 34 Operating Rooms and two PACU’s, and a Short Procedure Unit/Same Day Surgery Unit at Jefferson’s Main Campus as well as Methodist Hospital.  Operating Room nurses assist in the following types of surgery:  Orthopedics, ENT, Maxillofacial, Spine, Neuro, Hand, Cardiac, Vascular, Thoracic, Transplant, Urology, Gynecology, Plastics, and General.

Our 10-suite unit staffed at the Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience (JHN) is intended to meet the needs of surgical patients 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Surgical specialties include neurosurgery, ophthalmology, chronic pain management, otolaryngology, and plastic surgery.

Patient Testing Center (PTC)

The Patient Testing Center (PTC) provides quality care to patients to complete pre-admission testing prior to surgery and/or procedures. Anesthesiologists, nurse practitioners and medical technicians provide pre-admission evaluations for patients who will undergo cardiac, ENT, general, gynecologic, maxillo-facial, neurological, thoracic, orthopedic, transplant, urologic and vascular surgeries.

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) – Thomas Jefferson University Hospital / Methodist Hospital

Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) staff are highly-skilled registered nurses proficient in critical care nursing responsible for providing efficient, effective quality care to pre-operative patients within the Holding Areas and post-operative patients within the various PACU locations.  This care includes: assessing readiness for surgery; monitoring vital signs (oxygen saturation, temperature, heart rate, blood pressure and respiration); treating symptoms of post-operative nausea and vomiting; and managing post-operative pain.  On any given day as many as 80 to 110 patients from diverse cultural backgrounds and ages will be cared for in the PACU.

Short Procedure Unit (SPU); Same Day Admission (SDA)

The SPU/SDA/JAU unit provides care for surgical and non-surgical patient populations undergoing a procedure. Nurses provide comprehensive care that includes assessment, preparation and education to patients pre-operatively and post-operatively.  Surgical patient population types served include General Surgery, Cardiothoracic, ENT, Urology, Dental, Neurology, Orthopedic, and Gynecology.  Non-surgical procedures include Cardiac Catheterizations, CVIR, Endoscopic Procedures, Infusions, Transfusions, Bronchoscopies, and Biopsies.

The PACU/SDA/DSU/SPU is staffed 24/7 by an experienced and dedicated team of registered nurses proficient in critical care nursing who are responsible for providing efficient, effective quality care to pre-operative patients within the Holding Areas and post-operative patients within the various PACU/SPU locations.

On any given day the units may see surgery such as:

  • Microsurgery-Reconstructive surgery on small vessels
  • Endovascular embolization techniques
  • Stereotactic radiosurgery-Application of radiation, via either Shaped Beam Surgery or
  • Linear Accelerator (LINAC)-based X-Knife, precisely targeted to an AVM
  • Carotid endarterectomys
  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Plastic surgery
  • ENT
  • Pain Service – management of chronic pain
  • Ophthalmology
