Investiture of Makarand V. Risbud, PhD
Dr. Makarand Risbud has been named the first holder of the James J. Maguire, Jr. Professor for Spine Research. This was a wonderful opportunity for the Jefferson family to recognize Dr. Risbud and say thank you to Jamie Maguire and the Maguire Foundation for establishing the professorship.
Academic investitures honor our most accomplished faculty and celebrate the partnership between Jefferson and the benefactors whose generosity makes possible all that we do. Nowhere has the connection between generosity and healing been more obvious than at this event. Dr. Vaccaro recounted how Jefferson saved Jamie Maguire’s life and repaired the spinal-cord damage sustained in a cycling accident. His sister Megan Maguire Nicoletti singled out Dr. Vaccaro’s skill and dedication, and called it “a miracle” that Jamie is not only alive, but back on a bike.
“I’m just so grateful to Jefferson,” Jamie Maguire said. “I was given my life back, so it’s my privilege to give back to Jefferson.” That generosity will carry forward comparable healing and further miracles through the discovery that comes out of Dr. Risbud’s research—and from future Maguire professors. Dr. Mark Tykocinski added, “This is a place where miracles happen all the time.” Philanthropy is an indispensable part of making the miracles happen.
